when does something new gets old?
is something old ever exciting or desirable?
is something new ever comforting and genuine?
the moment right before something new becomes something old... is that moment ideal?

i want something in between... as exciting as new, as genuine as old...maybe not as shiny and desirable but comfortable and meaningful.

all shoes are pretty when first bought... they hurt your feet a bit initially... soon you get more comfortable in them and wear them everywhere... as they get worn out you consider other shoes and soon they get replaced by new ones that will go through the same cycle...

"Favorites" are those old things that are still enjoyed more then something new...however...you don't like the favorites question...

" don't like the questions about "favorites"...When asked, I can never come up with my real favorites on the spot..."

Probably hard to develop favorites if you are busy rushing from place to place...nothing has the time to become a favorite...

well....favorites dont become favorites because you are exposed to them frequently... so i disagree that one who travels often does not find/have favorites. I, myself do as well. They are usually not in the quantity of "one" per category. I have more than one "best" friends, more than one favorite movie, song, place on earth... as I have more than one emotion, mood, interest. in the favorites question, what I do not like is that it limits your answer to one and only one "thing" and I find it doesnt do justice to represent the big picture.

"Favorites" is plural...more then one thing =)

I guess my utilization of "favorites" was this: favoriteS as a group of "the favorite" from different genres... such as a combination of the answers to following questions: "what is your favorite movie?" " who is your favorite author?", "what is your favorite place in the world?"

In the above context, the questions are too broad for me.

We are off on a tagent here...back to my original point...do you agree with my use of "favorite" within the context of your post:

"i want something in between... as exciting as new, as genuine as old...maybe not as shiny and desirable but comfortable and meaningful."

Would not a favorite item (place, person, shoe) fit your description of what you seek? This was my only point =)

i do... a favorite would be a good description of that... though a new movie sometimes excites me more than a favorite one which I have watched over and over...

of course it is a different story when it is people, instead of movies...
